SAFETY AT SEA
Alternative design, Safe Return to Port (SRtP), Ship Design and Risk Assessment are the key points of the “Ship Design for Safety” skills where CETENA covers a leading position.
CETENA has carried out several Alternative Design studies, as Design Team safety experts, performing engineering support (Fincantieri, Lloyds Register, Bureau Veritas, Rina). The application of risk analysis techniques (Formal Safety Assessment, etc. ) with the support of specialized simulation tools (evacuation analyses, pedestrian flows and Fire CFD) allow to perform complex safety analysis in accordance with the rules/regulations (IMO, National, Classification Society) specific Owner requirements (Carnival Shipbuilding, Princess Cruises, Viking Cruises, Costa Crociere, Silver Sea, Virgin, Seabourn).
The Risk Assessment skills also apply to systems analysis where Safe Return to Port represents the edge application.
These skills have been consolidated with vulnerability assessment for Navy Ships. These complex studies are carried out with a dedicated tool developed in-house and capable to simulate any casualty (fire and flooding) and assessing the effects on the essential systems onboard (potential criticalities, deficiency, etc.) required for Safe Return to Port compliance. The identification of design alternative solutions and the operational recovery actions (including the effectiveness of level of automation on ship functions recovery performance) are part of the risk analysis.
Having developed these studies for many years, CETENA is today capable of supporting designers from the preliminary ship design phases and construction to the delivery and operation of the ship.
