Weatherrouting
Weatherrouting means choosing a ship's route to reach a given destination based on information on the weather conditions the ship will encounter on the route.
The ingredients for a weatherrouting are therefore:
reliable weather prediction, for the sea areas that the ship will navigate through
a software for the evaluation of the ship performance on the route , able to provide information on ship motions, fuel consumption, comfort on board.
CETENA is currently involved in a EU funded research project called WERMED, in which a weatherrouting system has been developed for the West Mediterrenean; based on weather forecast and ship data, a dedicated software provides indication on the best route to be followed to meet the ship master requirements in terms of arrival time, fuel consumption, comfort/safety on board.
If you wish to know more about WERMED, see www.wermed.net.
